Shropshire school edged out in national final

09/07/10   by Paul Bolton

St Lawrence School from Church Stretton were edged out in the final of the Yazoo Tag 2 Twickenham National Tag Rugby competition at Rugby School.

Stanley School from Teddington edged out St Lawrence with a golden try after the scores were level at the end of normal time.

The consolation is that St Lawrence and Stanley will now play a match at Twickenham Stadium prior to one of England's Investec Internationals in November as reward for reaching the final.

All 20 of the competing teams also had the chance to meet up with a modern day rugby hero, and Yazoo Tag Rugby Ambassador, British Lion and England's Sale Sharks wing Mark Cueto, fresh from England's recent tour defeat of Australia in Sydney.

Cueto has been involved with tag rugby for several years now and sees the game, where snatching off an opponent's Velcro tag worn around the waist replaces tackling, as the ideal way in which to introduce youngsters to rugby.

Cueto said: "You get so much of the basics of playing rugby, catching and passing of the ball and the running and beating the person in front of you.

"I think one of the reasons why the kids love it so much is because it's almost like a more complicated version of `tig' in a way, but, like I say, they do get so many of the fundamental skills that you need to play rugby.

"There's no contact at this level, that's for the next stage up, but for an introduction to the game it's awesome."

It was a full day for all of the school teams who competed in four pools during the morning session from which they were seeded from one to 20.

The top 10 teams then battled it out after lunch for the two final places and the chance to play at Twickenham while the remainder competed in a Plate competition won by Lincroft School, from Bedfordshire, in a match that also needed a `golden' try after the two sides were level four tries each at full time .

During the lunch break all of the competing teams were also given some tips and skills training by the England Women's A Shropshire-based Assistant Coach Andy Paton and England Women's internationals Dani Knight and Ollie Poore.

And, nobody went away empty handed either as every player was presented with a rucksack and water bottle courtesy of the England Junior Supporters Club, along with half-a-dozen rugby balls from Yazoo.

Also there to greet the teams was the Rugby Football Union's newly-elected President Richard Appleby who said: "It's a marvellous occasion and a fantastic tournament all together.

"I came last year and on each occasion I've been amazed by the enthusiasm and the numbers of the youngsters who have been here.

"It's a wonderful way for them to start and all around the country they must be benefitting from this programme."

Yazoo Tag 2 Twickenham was started back in 2002 by Dominic Chambers of the Child Victims Of Crime (CVOC) campaign as a vehicle to keep children away from crime and it's been hugely successful.

Keith Turner, Chairman of the Trustees of CVOC, commented: "Thanks to support of the RFU, Yazoo and Airwave Solutions, the police communication company, we've really grown and grown to the point where I think we've printed somewhere in the region of two million `Tackle Safety' leaflets."

The leaflets offer a young person guidance and instruction on how to stay safe if they should find themselves left on their own.
