North Midlands pair Sam Hollingsworth and Ethan Priest helped England Counties Under-20s defeat Georgia Under-20s 24-17 in the first of two matches in Tbilisi.
Hollingsworth, the Birmingham Moseley fly-half, started the match with Bromsgrove prop Priest making his debut off the bench.
“The players and coaches worked so hard for this huge result,” said England manager Chris Brookes.
“It was a very proud and emotional day. I am especially pleased for everyone involved in this vitally important aspirational pathway, from club to county, to divisional and on to England.”
England will face a Georgia Under-20 development side on Friday and will be hoping to finish their tour unbeaten for the second year in a row.
An early penalty gave the hosts the lead before England’s Connor Fied scored after 11 minutes to give the visitors the lead.
Hollingsworth converted the try and was on hand to extend England’s lead later in the first half when he slotted a penalty to make it 10-3 at the break.
England took all their momentum into the second half and gave themselves a 14 point lead when winger Tom Briggs scored in the corner. Hollingsworth once again converted to make it 17-3.
Georgia, who were predictably powerful in the pack, responded by using the strength in their forwards to gain territory and after a series of scrums in England’s half they scored a converted try.
The hosts followed their first try with another in the 75th minute to level the scores.
It looked likely to finish as a draw before a moment of magic from England sealed the win.
A lineout in the 78th minute for England in Georgia’s half. The ball came to full back Tom Carleton who burst through the line to score a sensational try and secure his side a 24-17 win.
“For some of these boys it will be the biggest games of their rugby careers so far, some will go on to bigger and better things, and for some this will be the highest level they play,” said head coach Richie Williams.
“The counties programme is about these opportunities, for players from all levels, for example, this years squad have players from level 3 to 8 who have gelled so well in a short space of time, I am so proud of the whole squad.”
