The North Midlands Rugby Football Union

The North Midlands RFU is a Constituent Body (CB) of the Rugby Football Union. It’s delegated authority now covers the counties (or Domestic Unions) of Greater Birmingham, Worcestershire & Herefordshire and Shropshire.

North Midlands was established by the RFU in 1919 to accommodate the playing of County Championship rugby and it combined the Clubs in the Counties of Greater Birmingham, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire. The County name, once apt, is now domiciled in tradition and largely anachronistic following the defections of Derbyshire (1926), to form a new County with Nottinghamshire & Lincolnshire, and Staffordshire (1964), seeking independence

Prior to the establishment of Areas in 2012 (North Midlands being allocated to Area 5 with Cheshire, Lancashire and Staffordshire) North Midlands was part of the historic Midlands Division which comprised North Midlands, Warwickshire, East Midlands, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and NLD (Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire & Derbyshire). With the implementation of the 2020 RFU Rugby Development revision the 6 former ‘Areas’ have been amended to 4 ‘Regions’ (South West, South East, Midlands and North). Eastern Counties have been included in the Midlands Region.

The new Midlands Region comprises North Midlands, Warwickshire, East Midlands, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and NLD (Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire & Derbyshire and Eastern Counties.
