Droitwich’s RFU Senior Vase campaign ended in disappointment with a 37-15 defeat at the hands of a powerful Farnham side in today’s final at Twickenham.
Droitwich battled bravely and were level 10-10 at half-time but Farnham pulled away in the second half to take the national title.
Sam O’Brien’s try and a conversion and penalty from Bobby Scott-Walker cancelled out similar scores from Farnham.
Two converted tries in the third quarter pulled Farnham clear but player/coach Pete Knight revived Droitwich’s hopes when he crossed for another converted try.
But the kicking of Toby Salmon and a try from his brother Mike, the sons, former England and New Zealand centre Jamie, quickly snuffed out the fightback.
The defeat was Droitwich’s first in league and cup rugby this season. They won Midlands Three West (South) and the Midlands Senior Vase before beating Tarleton in the semi-finals of the national Vase.
