North Midlands Under-16s opened their season with an easy 52-0 win over Staffordshire at windy Redditch this season.
A first-half hat-trick of tries from number eight Ted Hill (River School and Malvern) set North Midlands on their way to victory.
Hill, tall and powerful, proved too strong for Staffordshire and a superb individual try, when he ran from inside his own half, capped an outstanding performance.
A strong downfield wind dictated how the match was played and North Midlands made full use of the conditions when they had it at their back in the first half.
They ran in six unanswered tries before the break but then lost some of their shape in the second half when a raft of substitutions were made at half time.
North Midlands could not establish the same superiority in the second half when they had to play into the elements but Staffordshire rarely ventured into the home 22.
North Midlands were ahead inside a minute when openside flanker Aaron Hinkley (Bromsgrove School and Droitwich RFC) powered over from a line-out and fly-half Lewis Dorey (William Brookes School and Telford Hornets RFC) added the conversion.
Dorey scored the second himself from another line-out but his conversion, from in front of the posts, struck an upright.
Hill’s first try, from close range, and Dorey’s conversion extended the lead and Hill was again prominent in the move that led to centre George Amphlett (Malvern College) crossing for the fourth try.
Hill’s long range effort from the re-start was followed by his third just before the break and Dorey banged over his fifth conversion to open up a 40-0 lead.
It took North Midlands until five minutes from time to score again when left wing Alex Hearle (Church Stretton School and Church Stretton RFC) rounded off a thrilling move from deep.
Hinkley topped and tailed the scoring by crossing with the final play of the match which replacement Mitchell Brindley (Fairfax School) improved.
North Midlands next play Warwickshire in the opening Super Sunday event of the season at Bromsgrove RFC on November 2 (11am).
