County Cup winners face second final

Newport and Bridgnorth players will be aiming to win their second trophy in three days when Shropshire take on Greater Birmingham in the Three Counties Championship final at Stourbridge’s Stourton Park on Tuesday May 13 (7.30pm).Newport won the North Midlands Cup and Bridgnorth the North Midlands Shield on Finals Day at Dudley Kingswinford on Sunday and players from Shropshire’s two successful clubs will make up the majority of the county’s squad.

Shropshire are also boosted by the inclusion of Newport scrum-half Toby Mann who was unavailable for the North Midlands Cup final because of his RAF commitments.

Shropshire beat Greater Birmingham 56-22 in their final group match at Telford Hornets last Tuesday which was a dress rehearsal for the final although their Bridgnorth players were not available for that match.

Shropshire’s squad includes Ellesmere College teenagers Lewis Suckling and Jack Martin who impressed on their debuts last week.

The Three Counties Championship is contested annually by the three Domestic Unions – Worcestershire & Herefordshire are the third – that make up the North Midlands RFU and has given players from outside the National Leagues an opportunity to showcase their talent.
