Moseley have launched the only full-time rugby academy in Birmingham, which will start in September.
The is aimed at developing elite young sportsmen for a career in sport, by studying for academic qualifications and playing in a professional sporting environment.
Students aged 16-18 years will study together at the Billesley Common ground, where they will benefit from the use of the recently built new grandstand. First class facilities are available to students to enable them to improve as players and enhance their theoretical knowledge that underpins the sport.
The rugby academy will offer students the chance to embark on a level 2 or 3 BTEC programme and include additional Math’s and English where required.
The academy squad will compete on the Moseley first team pitch in the West Midlands Performance league with matches taking place on Wednesdays. Players will be encouraged to develop both their rugby and their own coaching skills throughout the programme and expand skills required for their chosen progression route.
John Beale, Moseley’s Director of Rugby, said “We are excited about developing such a prestigious partnership with Bournville College. We have a long history of developing our own players, and this initiative will greatly facilitate the process. Indeed, we would expect that some of these players could soon become young professionals within our 1st team squad.”
Jo Insley, Sports Development Coordinator at Bournville College said “This is a fantastic opportunity for talented young players to do what they are passionate about. They get to play rugby every day under the instruction of experienced and RFU qualified coaches, including members of the Moseley 1st team squad, whilst creating a foundation for their future, whether that be university or employment.”
More information about the Moseley Rugby Academy will be available at Billesley Common on February 24 from 5.30 pm onwards.
