North Midlands have adopted My Name’5Doddie Foundation throughout their centenary celebrations during the 2019/20 season.
The charity has been established by former Scotland lock Doddie Weir who is suffering from Motor Neuron Disease. The charity aims to raise funds to aid research into causes of MND, investigate potential cures, makes grants to individuals suffering from MND, to make a difference to the lives of those suffering from MND and for for rugby clubs and other organisations to have fun in activities that support the foundation.
North Midlands will be supporting the charity at events throughout the season and have encouraged all member clubs to organise their own events to support Doddie Weir and his charity.
Events already scheduled in North Midlands are a Greater Birmingham RFU Evening at Hennessey’s in Birmingham on September 7 with former England player and coach Roger Uttley as speaker.
There will also be a county-wide golf competition for North Midlands clubs.
The centenary celebrations will conclude with a Centenary Dinner at the St Johns Hotel in Solihull on June 20 2020 where a cheque will be presented to the trustees of the Doddie Weir Foundation.
Other suggested fund-raising activities include a charity box on the bar at clubs, bucket collections at matches, auctions at lunches/dinner, Burns Suppers, Rugby World Cup breakfasts, bike rides, fun runs and raffles.
For larger events North Midlands have access to speakers supporting The Foundation.
All money collected should come to North Midlands who have a dedicated bank account for the charity.
The Centenary Committee also have promotional items which can be used to decorate club houses for fund-raising functions including pop-ups, banners, Doddie Weir shirts, bow ties, headbands and drinking glasses.
