North Midlands have partnered with Howden, the RFU insurance brokers, to provide an introductory policy offer to clubs to insure their players against loss of earnings through accidental injuries sustained on the pitch.
The initiative, which forms part of North Midlands’ concern for player welfare, protects players’ weekly income should they be unable to work as a result of an accidental injury sustained while playing for or training with an insured team. No cover is provided for sickness, disease, chronic, ongoing or gradually operating injuries.
The policy provides a benefit of up to £300 per week or 75 per cent of the player’s weekly age (whichever is lower).
Clubs may insure as many teams as they wish at an annual premium of £980 per team to cover a full season. North Midlands RFU will assist towards the funding of a policy to cover one team.
Players making a claim should complete a claim form and return it to Howden who will ask for additional information to support the claim including confirmation from the club coach, physiotherapist or first aider as to when the injury occurred. Evidence of earnings in the 13 weeks prior to the injury will also be required.
Any claim must be submitted within eight weeks of the incident date, The cover will start after the player has been unable to work for 28 days and will be paid for up to 13 weeks from that onwards. For players not in employment the cover will be limited to out-of-pocket expenses to a maximum of £50 per week.
A part-refund of the premium paid of £300 will be made to clubs upon confirmation of the premium payment made to Howden.
