Old Griffinians will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a dinner at the Edgbaston Palace Hotel in Birmingham on November 21.
Old Griffinians were formed by players from the Bournville Technical School in Griffins Brook Lane and were originally a closed club restricted to former pupils at the school.
But the club went open in 1968 and has remained active ever since although they dropped out the league structure four years ago and now play only social rugby with their base at Five Ways OE Masshouse ground in Hopwood.
Old Griffinians have led a largely nomadic existence apart from a three year period between 1969 and 1972 when members converted a farm building at Headley Heath in Wythall into a clubhouse.
Among the other dozen or so grounds used by Old Griffinians are the Walkers Heath Playing Fields and the West Midlands Transport Sports and Social Club at Billesley where the club were tenants for several years before linking up with Five Ways OE.
The 1990s were probably the most successful years for Old Griffinians as the club had sufficient players to put out a fourth team and players were selected for county duty with North Midlands and Greater Birmingham.
But when Bournville School stopped playing rugby the supply of young players started to dry up and Old Griffinians began to struggle for senior players.
Old Griffinians hope that the celebration dinner will be a reminder of happier times and perhaps rekindle interest in the club.
Former players are welcome to attend with further details available at: www.oldgriffs.com or from president Trevor Bow at twbow@hotmail.co.uk or Stuart Fairfoul at sfairfoul@hotmail.com.
