Shropshire rugby is mourning Tom Hughes, a former player for the county and a stalwart of the Telford Hornets club, who has passed away after a short but complicated illness.
Hughes was born of Welsh parentage but spent most of his life in Hadley, Telford. He joined the GKN rugby team after he gained an an apprenticeship at GKN Sankeys.
After National Service Hughes played for the Wellington Hornets club and then for Telford Hornets and continued to play into his late forties going on to win county honours with Shropshire.
“He was always a follower of rugby on and off the field, sponsoring minis rugby at Telford and supporting Wales and rugby in general. I had many argument and side bets on the Five Nations and Six Nations as to would Wales finish above England or the other way. Tom was an avid supporter of rugby and will be dearly missed,” said Gordon Wood, past President of Shropshire.
