|Bridgnorth and Bredon Star took the early trophies at North Midlands Cup Finals Day at Dudley Kingswinford’s Heathbrook ground today.
Bridgnorth retained the North Midlands Shield by beating Stourbridge Lions 30-8 while Bredon Star claimed the North Midlands Vase for the first time with a 34-7 win over Woodrush.
Bridgnorth appeared to have done the hard work when they led 18-3 at half-time in the Shield final having played into a strong downfield wind in the first half.
But they had to contend with a stirring fightback from Stourbridge Lions in the third quarter which saw their lead reduced to ten points.
Two tries from centre Will Crossley helped Bridgnorth to pull away again and retain the trophy they first won 12 months ago.
Fly-half Jimmy Gore and hooker Danny Griffiths crossed for Bridgnorth in the first half with wing Biddell adding two penalties and a conversion.
Biddell also converted Crossley’s second try to complete the scoring.
Bredon Star’s win in the Vase final was more emphatic. They were 20-0 up against the Midlands Four West (South) champions by half-time and added another try early in the second half.
Scrum-half Stuart Doust scored two tries for Bredon with wing Gavin Maber, lock Joe Bowdon and centre Nathan Barry crossing for the others.
Woodrush’s consolation try came from wing Andy Warrilow in the second half with Ed Gardiner tagging on the conversion.
